Shower Faucet Repair Or Replacement Quick Guide

If your shower faucet is leaking you may be wasting over 1 litre of water per day, not to mention how annoying it is to hear “drip, drip, drip, drip” every time you are near the shower or in the middle of the night. The good news is, a shower faucet repair is not a difficult task reserved only for professionals. In fact, it’s very simple and you shouldn’t delay it more. If you can hold a wrench and screwdriver, you can repair your faulty shower faucet in a short amount of time.

Most bathtub faucets come in two varieties: some are held in place by a restraining bolt, hexagonal nut or screw, and those that have thrads built in and screws on the shower diverter itself. If you are in a hurry or not particularly attached to your existing shower faucet you can just replace it with a new one. Alternatively, you can just replace faulty shower faucet parts and reassemble the faucet. Unless you know for a fact which parts your faucet uses, it’s worth removing it and taking it with you to the hardware store to find spare parts or a compatible replacement faucet.

Removing A Shower Faucet

First of all, turn off the water to the circuit that powers the shower. There is usually a key somewhere in the bathroom that allows you to cut the water supply exclusively for that room, which is considerably more practical than having to leave the entire house without water supply. There will be some water left inside the faucet, so open it and let it drain to avoid making a mess. If you are going to be working on a slippery surface, such as from inside the bathtub, make sure you dry it so as not to put yourself in danger.

In order to remove the shower faucet, start by looking underneath it for a restraining bolt, screw or hex nut. You will need to use tools to loosen it and then you will be able to pull the shower faucet easily. If there is nothing holding it in place, you will only need to turn the whole thing counter-clockwise and it will come right off the wall. Bring it with you to the store, and the professionals there will help you locate faulty parts replacements or a new faucet that uses the same sized connections.

Once you have a new shower faucet, all you need to do is bring it home and install it the same as you uninstalled it. Some people recommend using plumber’s putty in order to ensure a tighter seal, but if there was a leak I personally think it’s preferable to just be able to see it, instead of water and mould accumulating inside the wall.

Different Types Of Shower Faucets

Not all shower faucets are the same, and the process to repair them is always slightly different. A two handle shower faucet, for example, will have two connections: one for hot water and another for cold water, and you can repair each handle separately. A single handle faucet has a single handle that you can swivel around to get hot or cold water, but not all single handle faucets are the same. Depending on the internal mechanisms of each you’ll have ball shower faucets, cartdrige shower faucets and ceramic-disk shower faucets. This is where bringing the faucet to the store comes in useful, as they will be able to help you figure out which one you have without having to take it apart.

Once the water supply is close and the faucet drained, put a rag or a sink plug on the drain, to make sure no screws or washers take an unintended trip down the drain. Some types of faucets, such as a ball faucet, will require you to buy a faucet repair kit to replace the broken parts, but it will still be much cheaper than buying a new one.
